--------------------------------------------

Rocky Grimes was born in Columbia, South Carolina on September 25, 1974. Shortly after his birth his family moved to the Florida Keys where he grew up on the island, Key Largo. During his early teen years Rocky and a group of friends started skateboarding and attending punk and hardcore shows in Miami and other areas of Florida. These subcultures had a profound impact on Rocky's creativity and his attraction to the arts. He holds a degree in Social Science and is a self taught artist.

Rocky’s work is heavily print based however, he has done installations, created videos and often incorporates found objects in his fine art and image making. His work is aesthetically rich, but not lacking in concept. Grimes not only challenges the viewer, but also challenges himself as he contemplates the subject matter that drives his work. Grimes is not interested in singular and literal subjectiveness and often melds the physical with intangible subjects like philosophy, thought, memory and multiple meanings of seemingly singular concepts. Often questioning and contemplating the relationships among context and meaning Grimes just can’t seem to approach a subject from a singular point of view and his work reflects a contemplative quality of metaphysics and existentialism. This push and pull questioning creates a conflict that occurs through the use of various media and techniques culminating in creations both disorienting and inviting, meaningless and meaningful, surreal yet concrete and just out reach yet close at hand.

While attending punk and hardcore shows Rocky was drawn to the visual aesthetics that accompanied the album artwork, photocopied show filers and zines of the punk and hardcore community. He also absorbed the do it yourself ethos that went along with the punk community. It was this inspiration that pushed Rocky to teach himself how to create silkscreens and how to print. However, Rocky has developed his own brand of silkscreen printing where he avoids using any machines or silkscreen presses to accomplish his work. His hand is involved in the entire process from start to finish. Grimes creates his own silkscreens and images that are applied to the screens.

His unique images and style of printing have garnered the attention of many individuals, galleries, publications and institutions in the arts. His work has been shown on three continents and in publications including Identity, Juxtapoz, and Swindle among others. He has printed live in many unique locations including, MOCA Miami, Project Trade Show (NYC and Las Vegas), and SCOPE Miami.

Rocky Grimes currently works and resides in South Florida.
