Lane Meyer Project is proud to present easily digestible, a solo exhibition by Matt Tripodi, curated by Drew Austin.

“Easily digestible” is usually an insult. Said about a book, a film, a painting, it means: shallow, crowd-pleasing, nothing to chew on. Real art, the thinking goes, should resist you a little. It should make you work. This show takes that phrase and does something else with it. Landing between the humorous work of Maurizio Cattelan and the felt abstraction of Mark Rothko, Matt Tripodi’s Easily Digestible presents a new series of paintings that boldly depict a “humorous abstract. ” Created on cotton rag with spray paint, airbrush, acrylic, and mixed media, the works draw from the visual language of formal abstraction—fields of saturated color, expressive mark-making, and open-ended interpretation while refusing to play by its rules. The mark of a bruised banana becomes an abstract painting once you add a crisp white border and hang it in a clean frame. That is the move, repeated sixteen times. Colorful fruit, classic snack foods, and charcuterie board ingredients arrive cropped and magnified until they read as pure field and gesture, and the institution of the art world starts to loosen its grip when you treat its restrictions as material to play with rather than a mold to squeeze into. The paintings on view laugh back at the viewer, asking you to look a little longer and smile a little harder. They are unserious about their subjects and quite serious about the painting: stay with any one of them and the gag gives way to something stranger— a bruise and a brushstroke carrying the same information, a rind doing the work of a horizon. There’s a habit, in a lot of contemporary work, of treating beauty as suspect — as if a piece that’s actually pleasant to look at must be hiding something, or worse, hiding nothing. Concept becomes the whole point, and craft and aesthetic pleasure get treated as a lesser concern, sometimes an embarrassing one. This work pushes back on that a little. It’s made with real technical care — airbrush and ink don’t forgive hesitation, and the pigment only blooms into wet paper once — and it wants to be looked at simply because it’s good to look at. But look a little longer and there’s more here than a punchline. Still life has always been about time: about things ripening, bruising, spoiling, being consumed. That hasn’t gone anywhere just because the fruit is rendered in spray paint instead of oil. The joke gets you in the door. What you find once you’re standing there is up to you. Come hungry. Stay as long as you want.

Matt Tripodi is a self-taught artist whose work resonates with a nostalgic energy of the 80s and 90s. His diverse interests inform his visual content and infuse his art with a humor, joy, and absurdity. Through painting and sculpture, Tripodi explores playful themes, often incorporating food, neon lights, diagrams, and childlike mark-making. Drew Austin (b.1996) is an interdisciplinary artist and curator living and working in Denver, CO. He grew up in Great Falls, Montana, and attended the Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design, in Denver, which he graduated from in 2017 with his BFA as Valedictorian. Austin is the Curator and a Board Member for Leon Art Gallery, the Program Manager for The Wayfaring Band, as well as a contributing editor for The Thalweg. He previously worked as the Curator of Visual Arts at The Dairy Arts Center, Exhibitions Curator for ReCreative Denver, and put together independent curatorial projects in spaces such as Redline Denver, The Temple Artist Studios, The Denver Armory, and Alto Gallery. www.studiodrewaustin.com | @studiodrewaustin
